Chakma Music Maestro Retired From Service: Abhik Kumar Chakma
Kamalanagar, October 1: The pioneer of Chakma Music Shri Abhik Kumar Chakma retired yesterday from service under Chakma Autonomous District Council after 33 years of long service. A grand and memorable programme, of the scale ever given to an employee of CADC, was staged today to bid him farewell and was moved to tears. Later, the Art & Culture Officer Shri Digambar Chakma said, Shri Abhik Kumar Chakma deserves such tributes for the invaluable contribution made by him to usher in a new era of Music for the Chakmas.
He was honoured with a cheque of Rs.50,000.00 and a set of traditional attire which was worn to him on the stage. The Art & Culture Officer said that a society is only complete if it has the four basic elements, a language, script, religion and a culture of its own and Shri Abhik Kumar Chakma has been instrumental in enriching the Chakma culture with his works. Shri Abhik Kumar Chakma was also asked to do the honour to release an Audio Visual CD of Chakma song on the day. The significance of getting the CD released by him lies in the fact that it shall bear to imply to carry forward his legacy by the budding artists, as told by the Art & Culture Officer.
The programme evoked an air of nostalgia with numbers, from the maestro, being recreated by young budding stars in his tribute who are his own legacy. Some of them were so touching and heard after a long spell that they produced goosebumps. His diehard fans got to relish a live performance by their maestro on the day with numbers from his earliest compositing while tracing his growth and evolution as an artist. He recalled his first performance at AIR, Agartala, Tripura in a duet with Mrs. Sobita Chakma on a composition by Mr. Bimal Momen Chakma ā āTawr Ar Mawr Mawnotā¦ā– at the age of 22. Impressed with his performance he was approved by AIR, Agartala as a folk music artist of the station. It was in the year 1979 he came to Mizoram on the invitation of friend and classmate Shri Pulin Bayan Chakma and later got appointed under CADC as Forest Guard while doing the duty of a music artist. Later, when CADC was entrusted the Art & Culture Department his service was transferred as a cultural artist and subsequently promoted to senior cultural organizer. It was by the sheer effort of his and the drive he had for music, the first ever Chakma Audio Music Cassette, āGIDO HUONG-1ā, solely sang by him, could be produced in the year 1990. The cassette was an instant hit and Shri Abhik Kumar Chakma became a household name. The success of the āGIDO HUONG-1ā made the authorities of CADC bring out its sequel in 1991 where Shri Nagendra Sen Chakma and Mrs. Sobita Chakma joined him.
He was the first Chakma artist to learn to prepare notation for songs own his own with help from books. As a young boy his formal training in music was only for 21 days. He has prepared notations of about 38 of his compositions so far, for which he received acknowledgement of his ability from Pub Guwahati Music College, Guwahati, Assam an institute affiliated to Bhatkhande Sangit Vidyapith, Lucknow and from Rabi Sangeet Bharati, Dharmanagar, Tripura. He passed the Prathama and Maddhyama in vocal in the year 2007 and 2008 respectively from Pub Guwahati Music College, Guwahati. He made an attempt to open a Music school at Kamalanagar and established one by the name āSangeet Arganiā in the year 2005 with the intention to introduce formal learning of music to budding students but failed to keep it up and finally had to close in 2008, for which he expressed his regret.
Community Welfare Programme By 1st BN CRPF At Kamalanagar
Kamalanagar, September 18: The 1st Battalion, the parent battalion of the CRPF deployed in Mizoram has arranged a community welfare programme today at Kamalanagar providing with safe drinking water devices at the Community Health Centre, Chawngte and Kamalanagar Public School, malaria detection kits to the public and installed a street solar light near Mahamuni Buddha Vihar junction. The water purifying devices were fitted to an overhead water tank mounted over a concrete platform.
Ā They have been rendering community services around the state, under the Civic Action Programme. Under the same programme, they have earlier in March 2010 distributed First Aid boxes with medicine, bookshelf with books and footballs at schools in Kamalanagar.
The Commandant of the Battalion Shri Vinay Kumar Tripathi took all the pain to come all over from Aizawl to grace the occasion and interacted with the local people, school children and college going students. He also paid a visit to a 25 years old Buddhist Temple at the heart of Kamalanagar and paid his homage. While speaking on the occasion he said that the Ministry of Home Affairs keeps fund provision to be utilized for the welfare of the community and so this year it was intended to provide safe drinking water besides other things. The Programme could be successful with the effort of Officer Commanding, Inspector S. N. Ojha with cooperation from the civil authority.
The Objective of the Civic Action Programme is to bridge the gap that exists between the Force community and the Civilians and create a cordial and healthy relation and bring about understanding and cooperation among the two. It is done with the hope that the programme of this nature would one day help change the perception of the people for the Force community from one of brute and coercion into one of security, help and a friend.
NLUP Assistance under 3rd & 4th Phase Distributed
Kamalanagar, September 12: Assistances under 3rd and 4th phase of NLUP were distributed today at Kamalanagar to as many as 1100 families of Tuichawng MLA constituency. Earlier, in the month of August in a similar programme as many as 933 families received NLUP assistance under the 2nd phase. The distribution of the 3rd phase was an assurance given then. The 1st phase has covered as many as 2694 families under the Programme.
The programme of NLUP has been conceived by the current Congress led Government of Mizoram targeting the economically downtrodden section of the society to fight and eradicate poverty and give the people sustainable source of livelihood. The programme shall cover as many as 1.35 lakh families which shall involve about Rs.2,800.00 Crores.
Todayās programme was graced by Dangu Nirupam Chakma, Honāble local MLA as its Chief Guest and Dangu Dr. Buddha Dhan Chakma, Honāble CEM, CADC as Guest of Honour.
āThe 4th phase which was actually supposed to be given later, was made possible today thanks to the Central Government and the State Governmentā, said Dangu Dr. B.D., Honāble CEM, CADC while speaking on the occasion. He expressed his happiness over the progress of works especiallyunder the Agri sector which he said are evident when a tour is taken around CADC.
The Honāble MLA while speaking on the occasion reminded the people that the Programme of NLUP was a part of the election manifesto of the Congress Party in their last Assembly Election and because of which he said the people have given them a mandate of 32 against 8 out of 40 assembly seats. He said, accordingly they have kept their electoral commitment and shall continue to work to the faith of the people of Mizoram. He further said the Congress Party is yet again ready with a new manifesto for the ensuing Assembly Election which is due by the end of this year and believes the people shall happily repose their faith in it.
While taking advantage of the occasion he said that land acquisition process, for the construction of the arterial road connecting Kamalanagar with Lunglei into double lane highway, has already started and contractors for the work which is to be funded by Wolrd Bank shall be selected by the month of January 2014. Blacktopping of the Chawngte-Diltlang road shall start by this year, he said. Rs.2.50 Crore has been sanctioned under MSDP for the establishment of an ITI Training Centre at Kamalanagar which shall empower the youth with vocational skill, he said. He shared with the audience the good news that Kamalanagar College shall soon be provincialized from Deficit status, which he said, has been approved by the Cabinet.
67th Independence Day Celebrated in CADC
Kamalanagar, August 15: CADC celebrated Indiaās 67th Independence Day with great colour and pomp. Honāble Parliamentary Secretary Pu H Zothangliana graced the occasion as its chief guest.
The occasion witnessed the routine March Past represented by contingents from paramilitary force and children of different schools.
There was a great display of colourful cultural items representing the two communities, the Chakmas and the Mizos, who have been living together here for centuries. True indeed, this reflects Indiaās character of unity in diversity.
Earlier, in the morning at 7.00 am the Honāble Chief Executive Member Dr. Buddha Dhan Chakma unfurled the National Flag in front of the Secretariat of Chakma Autonomous District Council. He recalled all the freedom fighters with tribute who have sacrificed their life for our today. He also paid his tribute to all those Chakma leaders who have been instrumental in the creation of the only piece of Chakma Land, Chakma Autonomous District Council, where they are privileged with political-determination.
Dr. B.D. Chakma in his speech reminded the people of CADC of Indiaās 2020 Vision target to declare itself as a developed nation and invited them to share this dream to enable ourselves worthy of staying on this planet. To make ourselves worthy of direct funding, for which the three Autonomous Councils have been strongly pursuing for long, he said, āit is important we change our attitude towards our work culture and start giving our bestā. While recalling the inauguration of Borapansury Primary Health Centre early this year, he expressed his sadness about not being able to find Doctors to run the Hospital, which he said reflects the lack of human resources the society suffers from and pledged to introduce science stream at Kamalanagar Govt. Higher Secondary School by next year with the help of the State Govt. In an attempt to encourage meritorious students, he unveiled a plan to hold Merit Scholarship Exam for Class-IV & VIII standard students and successful candidates shall be entitled to scholarship for Cl-V, VI, VII and Cl-IX, X respectively.
He expressed hope that ongoing works and upcoming works under various projects and schemes such as Modernization of Kamalanagar Town, Completion of CADC Cultural Hall Cum Museum, construction of New Secretariat Building, Legislative Building, Kamalanagar College and blacktopping of town area roads leading to New secretariat Complex and Helipad shall surely give a facelift to Kamalanagar Town.
2nd Phase NLUP Assistance Distributed in CADC
Kamalanagar, August 7: As many as 933 NLUP beneficiaries within Tuichawng cluster, with trade selection under Vety and Animal Husbandry, Industry, Fishery and Agriculture received assistance today in a programme held at the Art & Culture Hall of CADC, Kamalanagar. It was their second installment under the second phase of the programme.
The programme was graced by the Honāble local area MLA Dangu Nirupam Chakma as its Chief Guest who said that Tuichawng cluster has the highest number of beneficiaries under the programme with as many as 5491 families covered under it. Under the 3rd phase as many as 750 families shall start receiving assistance by September this year, he told. He urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the assistance being given to them to make themselves self sufficient. While it shall be the endevour of their Government in the next term if voted to power, he said, to create marketing opportunities for the beneficiaries. He said it will be a challenge for the Government of Mizoram to make NLUP a model to be emulated in rest of India.

Green CADC Week Launched On World Environment Day
Kamalanagar, June 5: CADC with rest of the world today celebrated the World Environment Day with the launching of Green CADC Week on the occasion. The programme organized by the Environment and Forest Department, CADC in collaboration with āTarumā- an environmental NGO based in CADC – was flagged off by the Honāble CEM, CADC Dr. Buddha Dhan Chakma.
Councilors, employees and students gathered in hundreds early in the morning to participate in the programme which started off with planting of seedlings supplied by the Forest Department along a stretch of about 5 km road from Kamalanagar-IV to New Secretariat Complex.
In the afternoon a cultural programme was organized to mark the day. School children from different schools performed on items based on environmental theme.
The CEM, CADC speaking on the occasion spoke about the implication of Global warming over the sustenance of life on this planet. The lost of forest cover within CADC is mainly attributable to our age old practice of Jhum cultivation which he said needs to be resolved through institutionalized policy. He said it shall be the endevour of his Government to introduce control over the way how jhum is currently practiced with cooperation from the leaders of the village councils. While speaking on the occasion he also expressed his hope over the newly formed environmental NGO āTarumā of their contribution towards conservation and development of the environment.
Finally, at the end of the programme prizes of the inter school quiz contest conducted by Tarum earlier in the morning were distributed by Dangu Amarshriti Chakma, E/M i/c Environment and Forest. Dangu Lokkhijoy Chakma, President, Tarum made it a point that the time is running out and itās high time to swing into action rather than simply laying down Acts and Rules.
