CEM discusses mineral extraction licences and royalty sharing with Directorate of Geology & Mining

Aizawl, August 31: Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC), Shri Nirupam Chakma, along with Shri Kalendra Tongchangya, OSD, Chakma House, today held discussions with officials of the Directorate of Geology and Mining, Government of Mizoram, at Luangmual, Aizawl, on matters relating to mineral extraction licences and sharing of mineral royalties under Paragraph 9 of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India.

During the meeting, the CEM discussed matters concerning the granting of mineral extraction licences by the State Government and the sharing of mineral royalties with the Autonomous District Councils. He emphasised the need for greater clarity and coordination between the State Government and the three Autonomous District Councils on matters relating to mineral extraction and royalty sharing.

Shri Nirupam Chakma suggested that the State Government convene a joint meeting with all three Autonomous District Councils to deliberate on the issues and evolve an appropriate mechanism in accordance with the constitutional provisions of the Sixth Schedule.

Pu Liangura Pachuau, Director, Geology and Mining, and Er. Lalremmawia, Joint Director, Geology and Mining, briefed the CEM on the relevant provisions, procedures and issues concerning mineral extraction licences and royalty matters.

The CEM appreciated the officials for the detailed briefing and expressed the hope that a structured consultation involving the State Government and all three Autonomous District Councils would help resolve outstanding issues and facilitate the effective implementation of the constitutional provisions relating to mineral resources and royalties.
