KAMALANAGAR, November 5: Pu Dr. Kenneth Chawngliana, Vice-Chairman of the Mizoram State Planning Board, held a meeting with the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC), Dg. Nirupam Chakma, the Chairman, Dg. Kali Kumar Tongchangya, and the Councillors at the CADC Rest House Conference Hall, Kamalanagar, today. The Executive Secretary, Deputy Secretary and heads of departments were also present.

During the meeting, the CEM apprised the Vice-Chairman of the major challenges faced by the Council, particularly the shortage of funds for payment of salaries and poor road connectivity. Despite these financial constraints, he said, the present administration had undertaken road repairs using the Councilโs own local receipts, as a result of which vehicular movement has now been restored up to Longpuighat.
The CEM submitted several representations seeking financial assistance for various developmental projects of the Council. These included a request for funds under SASCI to complete the new Secretariat building, which has remained incomplete for more than 12 years. He pointed out that the Council continues to function from its existing Secretariat building, constructed in 1992, which is now in poor condition and inadequate to meet its requirements.

The CEM also requested that three projects proposed by the Council, including two relating to school and education infrastructure and one on fisheries development, with a total outlay of Rs. 2,529.94 lakh, be included in the Stateโs priority list for funding under Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS). He pointed out that CADC has not received any project under CSS through the State priority list since 2020.
Other proposals included a request for Rs. 2.02 crore under SASCI for the renovation of CADC Rest Houses at Aizawl, Lawngtlai and Kamalanagar, and Rs. 10 crore for the reconstruction of the Rest House at Lunglei, which has been declared unsafe for further use. The CEM impressed upon the Vice-Chairman the importance of Lunglei Rest House, which provides accommodation to a large number of visitors, particularly people from economically weaker sections who travel to the town for medical treatment.
Financial assistance was also sought for furnishing the newly constructed student hostel at Chakma House, Aizawl, to make it operational.

The Vice-Chairman heard the concerns and requests raised by the Council. Addressing the gathering thereafter, he said that the project proposals submitted by the CEM would be looked into, particularly the completion of the Secretariat building, which would be taken up on priority basis. He also expressed his intention to visit Kamalanagar again after the building is completed. Earlier in the day, he had inspected the new Secretariat building and advised the Council to prepare a fresh estimate for completion of the project.
Dg. Kali Kumar Tongchangya, Chairman, offered the vote of thanks on behalf of the Council, expressing gratitude to the Vice-Chairman for visiting Kamalanagar and for his assurance of support.
